CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“Evelyn,” I said, as she cried like we were at a funeral. She looked up at me, silently begging me to please return her man to her. Not my line of work. “What am I gonna do without him? I don’t know what to do!”

“Evelyn, Miasha is still outside on the porch,” I informed her, just in case she was concerned. No such luck.

“Fuck her!” she yelled. “That little bitch has ruined everything! You should have taken her as soon as you came! Damn all that talking shit out!”

“What exactly did you think I came here for?” I asked.

“To lock her ass the fuck up like she should be!”

“Evelyn, that’s not my job. I’m not the police,” I informed her. “I thought you wanted to do some behavior modification with her.”

“I did, until she said what she said about Terrence!”

“Okay, forget about that for a minute!” I said, raising my voice. That shit was irritating the hell out of me. “Get off the Terrence situation and let’s focus on your relationship with your fourteen year old daughter who you currently have locked out of the house! Terrence will probably be back soon. He probably just needs a cool-off. Blane is fine, he’s with his father. But your daughter, who already feels like you don’t love her, is locked outside on the porch in South Central LA. Need I say more?”

“But she-”

“Then talk to her about it!” I said. “She’s admitted and apologized for her part in this, but you have yet to do that.”

“I haven’t done anything wrong!” she yelled angrily.

“You want her to communicate, but when she tried to, you wouldn’t listen. You called her names like she’s a grown woman, and then you locked her outside. And let’s not even mention what you said to Terrence when he was leaving. She’s not old enough to really understand why he didn’t take her anyway and deal with the consequences later. In her eyes, he didn’t care enough to help her just like you don’t care enough to let her inside. You threatened him into leaving someone who he has raised since she was a child, locked outside her home. ”

“I wouldn’t have really done that though,” she said, with fresh tears welling up in her eyes. “I love Terrence so much,” she said, rocking back and forth.

“I’m not a marriage counselor,” I snapped. “Now, either you want my help or you don’t. I’m not here to fix things between you and your man. I’m here to keep your daughter from ending up in prison or the cemetery. So if we’re not going to discuss her, you’re wasting my time.”

“You’re talking to me like this shit is my fuckin’ fault!” she yelled through her tears.

“I’m not here to point fingers. I’m here to help you re-establish some kind of relationship with your daughter. At first, I thought she didn’t want one with you, but now I see that it’s really you who doesn’t want one with her.”

“I’ll talk to her,” she said.
